ACADAOS Professional Development Award

The ACADAOS Professional Development Committee Award is funded through the Office of Academic Affairs. This award provides financial support to current ACADAOS members who are pursuing professional development. Money is awarded to help defray the cost to attend and/or present at an advising -related conference More details available soon.

 

ACADAOS Student Outreach Funding Request

The Student Outreach and Engagement Committee of ACADAOS is pleased to announce the “Application for Student Outreach and Engagement Funding”.  Interested persons may apply for grants up to $100 for student outreach events within your college/office. Please note the guidelines on the application. Most notably, we cannot pay for food/beverage costs.  There are 10 awards available and will be handled on a “first-come, first-considered” basis. The application period for funds will remain open for the remainder of the academic year or until funds are exhausted, whichever comes first.

The Academic Advising Association of Ohio State (ACADAOS), the professional organization for academic advisors, announces the 2008 Outstanding Advisor Awards for undergraduate advising. The award is jointly sponsored by the Office of Academic Affairs at The Ohio State University.

The award winners are Rachel Sanabria from the Department of Spanish and Portugues and Mary Hoy from the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering. They were recognized at the annual ACADAOS Awards Luncheon and year-end meeting at the RPAC on Wednesday, May 21, 2008, where Dr. Martha Garland presented a plaque and a $500 honorarium to each award winner.

Other award nominees are Bev Barrick, Department of Food, Agriculture and Biological Engineering (not pictured); Emily Carpenter, Humanities Scholars; Sharyn Talbert, Department of English; Susan Vanpelt, School of Communication; and Rebecca Ward, Honors Collegium.

What members have been up to:

  • Stephanie Elliott (EXP) and Jennifer Klosterman-Lando (ASC) presented "Pre-Orientation: Bridging the Gap between Admittance and Orientation," NACADA Annual National Conference, Balitmore, Maryland, October, 2007.
  • Joanna Spanos (ASC Honors) and Rebecca Ward (Honors Collegium) presented "X-treme Academic Success: Helping to Create the Story the First Year and Beyond," UAFYE Conference on the First Year, Columbus, Ohio, April 23, 2008.
  • Anne Collins (ASC) is the chair of teh Critical Difference for Women Scholarship Committee. Linda Matthews (NWK) and Karen Prost (NWK) are members of the committee.
  • Nikki Herbert (PHR) has been appointed to a 3-year term on USAC beginning in July. Carol German (EHE) will be coming off USAC, so we still have an advisor in the group.
  • Mary Bailey (Chem) has presented "Chemistry Can Be Fun" (30-45 minutes of live chemistry demonstrations with audience interaction) to a wide variety of elementary, middle, and high school groups, including the MPS/COE Open House, the Ohio Virtual Academy, Women in Science Day, Essex School for the Gifted, and a Summer Science Saturday for Ursuline College. She also was the Event Supervisor for all of the Chemistry events at the annual Ohio Science Olympiad for the 22nd year in a row!
  • Carla Matmiller (Fin Aid) was a member of Leading Edge '07, a leadership development institute for Ohio State staff, offered every other year. She also presented three sessions of "Get a Grip on Your Finances: Smart Spending for Students" for the First Year Succes Series.
  • Peg Steele (CSE) will be finishing up a 2-year term this October as chair of the Engineering and Science Commission for NACADA.
  • George Steele (Ohio Learning Network) will be receiving the Service to NACADA Award this October. He will also be receiving a NACADA Service to Commission Award from the Technology in Advising Commission.
  • Steven Mousetes (Honors & Scholars) received the first Academic Advisor Excellence Award from OHAAA in June 2007. Paula Hook (EXP-retired) was a nominee.

What is ACADAOS?

Mission and History

Academic Advising Association of Ohio State (ACADAOS) was founded in 1991 to encourage greater interaction and discussion among campus professionals, faculty, and graduate students interested in advising issues at The Ohio State University. ACADAOS was recognized as an official Ohio State University organization by the Provost in 1995. This organization has been allied with the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA) since 1994.

All interested campus professionals and faculty members are welcomed to join. Please contact the one of the Membership Chairs for details. Members of ACADAOS keep in contact with the latest campus advising information and with each other through their own LISTSERV.
